I've really screwed this up. i somehow logged into icloud with an email address that isn't accurate and that doesn't match my apple id. in trying to correct that, i have signed out of my apple id and signed back in (as other posts suggested) and then tried to delete the icloud acct but i have on my ipad the find my ipad app..
